Matthieu - New American Bible
L'évangile de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ selon Saint Matthieu a été rédigé sans doute vers 80-90, dans une communauté d'anciens juifs devenus chrétiens. Matthieu polémique volontiers avec les pharisiens de Jamnia et il montre comment Jésus accomplit les écritures. Cette volonté délibérée de persuader ses lecteurs exerce une influence sur la manière dont Matthieu traite les faits : il les détache volontiers de leur contexte historique, et les réduit dès lors à leurs éléments essentiels : tous les détails inutiles sont bannis, Matthieu condense le récit, les précisions temporelles disparaissent, les détails s'estompent, les personnages passent au second plan : tout ceci donne une atmosphère d'obscurité, un élan énigmatique. Mais dans les discours, Matthieu est incomparable. Voici le plan de l'évangile : naissance et vie cachée (1-2), préparation au ministère de Jésus (3-4), Ministère en Galilée et pays voisins (4-18), la montée à Jérusalem (19-20), à Jérusalem (21-25), la Passion (26-27), après la résurrection (28). Publicain devenu apôtre, bien que témoin oculaire, il a utilisé la catéchèse hiérosolymitaine de Saint Pierre. Il y a joint ses propres souvenirs.
